LA ROCHELLE WALKING TOUR

Description

LA ROCHELLE CITY TOUR

With its picture postcard harbour, medieval fortifications and breathtaking skyline, La Rochelle is a delightful town awaiting your discovery!

Drive along La Corniche - the picturesque seafront of the town, seeing the elegant gardens of Le Mail, the harbour and its two towers.
Built in the Middle Ages to close the harbour off safely every night, Tour St Nicholas and Tour de la Chain are the town’s dramatic emblems.
The Great Clock marks the start of medieval La Rochelle’s Old Town and from here you enjoy a walking tour of the district where ancient arcades once sheltered 16th century craftsmen and the streets are paved with cobblestones brought over as ballast in ships sailing from Canada.
Admire a wealth of architecture from many different periods including 15th and 16th century half-timbered houses, the splendid 18th century Hotel de la Bourse, the Law Court with its Corinthian façade, renaissance-style house of Henry II and imposing Town Hall featuring a renaissance lodge in the courtyard and monumental staircase.

After time to explore this interesting town at leisure you return to Discovery through fine gardens established on the site of the ancient ramparts and past the commercial harbour La Pallice, which was used as a submarine base during the Second World War.
