The largest european naval dockyard of the 17th century built by the king Louis XIV. Its jewel, la "Corderie Royale" (The Royal Rope Factory) - 373 yards long - is situated on the banks of the River Charente and has just been embellished during a very careful restoration.
Once a rope factory, it now houses the "Centre International de la Mer" and a permanent exhibition on "ropes and hawsers".

Instigated in the early 90’s, the project to rebuild the Hermione entered into active phase in early 1997.
The rebuilding of the Hermione, La Fayette’s frigate, is installed in the double dry dock dating back to 1728 and fitted out for the occasion.
The construction is led by a team of experienced shipwrights.
