THE LOIRE VALLEY

Full day 8 hours
from Nantes & St Nazaire

Description

Departure is from your port of call with your driver and an English speaking guide by freeway.

Arriving in Anger your guide will lead you to the Castle which was erected because of the strategic position next to the Maine River, in a position that was earlier occupied by the Romans for the same reason.
Much of the current chateau was constructed in the early 13th century, between 1230 and 1240, by Saint Louis after his grandfather Philip II had captured the region from the English.
For the following centuries it remained an important castle as base for the Angevin Kings.
The chateau is enormously sturdy, with several hundred meters of defensive walls further reinforced by a total of 17 towers.
The fortress house the famous Apocalypse Tapestry depicting the rise of the antichrist, which is the hydra mentioned, and finally The Beast... nine heads and twelve horns? It’s the story of the apocalypse as written in the bible. I believe.

After the visit you will have 1.30 hour on leisure for shopping and lunch on your own.

Then back on board the bus to drive back to the ship by scenic route passing by the following villages alongside the Loire river bank via Brissac chateau

Note

This is an 8 hours tour from Nantes but 9 hours from Saint Nazaire. Angers Chateau and Tapestry admission fee included.
