half day 4.30 hours
from La Rochelle

Departure is from your port of call with your driver and an English speaking guide to Brouage by freeway.

The small town of Brouage with its 17th century fortress first economy is salt production produced by  the salt-marshes which has always been a source of wealth in this region.

Now it is known as the capital of salt situated deep in the marshes (2 miles from the sea) between the river Charente to the north and the river Seudre to the south. The ramparts still have tales to tell, those of Samuel Champlain (founder of Quebec) as well as the love story of Marie Mancini and Louis XIV.

In 1685 Vauban was ordered to review the fortifications in order to put them onto an adequate war footing, together with the task of fighting the endless silting.

Oyster tasting can be organized upon request.
